A few weeks ago I decided to buy a pair of these plates because I like the way it looks and I support the cause on it.
I will admit that in New York custom plates are a lot of money but it really isn’t that bad if you really want them. The annual fee only costs a couple of chipotle meals to renew them every year.
So do any of you guys have custom plates of any kind?

Nope. Custom/vanity plate = easy to recognize/remember.
Same reason I don’t want custom paint or to adorn my ride with stickers.
Random Driver: “Yeah, it was this grey car. It zipped by me way too fast!”
Dispatch Officer: “Did you get a license plate?”
Random Driver: “No. It went by too fast.”
Dispatch Officer: “How about a better description of the car?”
Random Driver: “Well, it was grey. Maybe silver. Oh, it was a hatchback! That helps, right?”
Dispatch Officer: “How about the make and model?”
Random Driver: “I really don’t know. It was a small car.”
Dispatch Officer: “Did it have any distinguishing features like a bumper sticker or special plates?”
Random Driver: “Uhhhh, I didn’t see any stickers. I’m not very much help, am I?”
Dispatch Officer: “Thank you for your report. We will keep our eyes out for a small silver or grey hatchback that is going too fast.”

Yes indeedily-doo! When I was a kid I thought that was the coolest thing you could do once you “made it,” so I’m living out my low-expectation white trash dreams. I’ve had three different vanity plates now, on an Explorer (URSHOE, one half of a college hockey joke and California didn’t approve T4KEOFF for my bike), Cherokee (MUDDYXJ with the Michigan alumni plates), and the current one on my 1LE. Debating changing it this year.

Yep. Originally got them for a Volvo wagon (which made more sense)

I’ve always been opposed to them, but with my MR2 being named Charlie, I really want to get a “DAYMAN” plate.

I’ve thought of getting a set to get rid of the yellow NYS plates. The volunteer fire ones are still white, as are some others like the sports team ones etc. Iwish commercial ones were white.

On the Land Rover it has the plate NANTCK for Nantucket where we spend our summers.
Then on the Expedition it has ACKCRW, ACK is the Nantucket airport abbreviation then CRW is for crew.

We have “Support the Horse” plates on the S40
And “Adopt a Greyhound” plates on the truck
Both are things that we support.

Yep. It’s a music thing that I’d have to go full James May in order to explain though.

I do! She’s a mix; an unknown dog got a racing bitch pregnant and the litter was abandoned. We rescued one of the survivors and have been through hell. It’s been the best hell though. I also assist at events where the Greyhound rescues show and hope to foster in the near future.
This is Tara (nee Shirley). We rescued her at 9 months. She’s about six now and the other breed (Australian Cattledog) is starting to show through more. She’s epileptic with a light fixation so she’s a bit hard to photograph :(

Aww. I’m going to try to rescue one here after this semester ends. I'll have a full time internship but that'll kind of get it used to my accounting lifestyle. My parents have 3 so it won't be lonely at least

Just don’t get a pup and you should be fine :)
TBH if anyone had told us, prior to adoption, just how abso-fucking-LUTELY psychopathic greyhound youths can be and that they don’t mature until around 4 years old, we probably would have re-considered. Thankfully what was done was done though. I’ve found a breed I adore and a cause I can happily support. We also got a Border Collie to help train Tara; best idea ever.

Yeah I’m looking at ex racers that are 2-4 years old. Figured by then the personality is known and they test them for cat/small dog/children safety before they adopt them out.

I feel like that would be more of a problem if you had a Corvette or something that sticks out. My car is a Honda Pilot so it blends in really well.

I have the old blue and white plates right now, I like them but they have dents and are fading so I wanted to get rid of them. You actually can get a commercial plate on most custom plates I think.

My point is that unique plates and bumper stickers make a generic car more recognizable. That’s fine if you want to make your genericmobile stand out from the crowd. That’s not so fine if you want your car to remain somewhat anonymous.
